Two Faves for Friday

Two things I am loving right now:

1) Song: Let her go by Passenger. It’s on a CD in the car right now and I just turn it up and belt it out. Here’s the link on You Tube:

2) Book: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. It’s a non-fiction book about a black woman named Henrietta Lacks who died from cancer in the 1950s. Her cells, however, live on to today and are known to scientists as the cell line HeLa. These cells have been used to make many important scientific discoveries (for example, making the polio vaccine). However, they were taken before there were rules about taking cells from patients and her family didn’t even know her cells had been taken until decades after the fact. The book explores her life, her family’s lives, and discusses medical ethics and issues of race. It is a fascinating and educational read.

Hi Renata, Jim is reading this book too. heavy reading

  2. So many interesting points in the book and so much about cells and medical research I did not know. It also makes me wonder about what exactly I signed before surgeries, what really is informed consent, and what happened to any waste from my surgeries…
